Gender, Water and Climate Change (GWCC) is an initiative of Center for Social Research
(CSR)*, which aims to promote gender equality in water conservation and management. We
work closely with self-help groups to empower women to rebuild traditional water
conservation practices and empower them to become future ‘water leaders’.
Women have played an important role in the conservation and management of natural
resources in the water sector. Besides, women have also contributed significantly in
development initiatives and poverty alleviation measures.
ABOUT DEPARTMENT OF GENDER, WATER & CLIMATE CHANGE
A Self-Help Group (SHG) is a small group
of women who come together regularly
to form a joint liability group and do
money transactions. As we all know that
women are the ones who manage water
in their homes. Self-help groups not only
play an important role in educating
women in water conservation strategies
but also sensitize each other about how
important water is.
WHY WOMEN OF SELF-HELP GROUPS (SHGS)?
The project started in Alwar in 2018. Then in 2020, CSR worked through women of Self Help
Groups (SHGs) in other villages of Alwar.
In this phase (2023) through the Federal Republic of Germany (Embassy of Germany),
leadership trainings in various villages and site selection for Johad rejuvenation is to be
conducted. This work will be done on the basis of lessons learnt from project
implementation.
Goals:
1. Under the project, self-help group leaders and elected women representatives will be
provided training to enable them to take up the responsibility of water conservation in their
areas.
2. Technical knowledge of water conservation how to use water conservation techniques
like ponds, drains, stepwells, small earthen dams and anicuts.
About the Project:
Women's confidence and empowerment in their ability to increase access to water for
themselves and their communities is one of the key achievements of our work.
