Two
days Gender Training on Gender
and Human Rights 16th &
17th March 2005 (Bhubaneswar)
Two days training
workshop was organized for the
functionaries of several NGOs
working under the umbrella of
Lutheran World Relief (LWR).
The topics covered in the trainings
were concept of gender by differentiating
it from sex, gender stereotypes,
socialization and its impact
on our mindsets, gender theories,
gender analysis and gender and
AIDS. The methodology used was
participatory in nature with
group exercise and presentations
by participants. Human rights,
domestic violence, and role
of NGOs to curb the violence
were also covered. Top

Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU) regularly organizes
‘Interactive Radio Counseling
(IRC)’ sessions, wherein panels
of experts (with expertise in
diverse fields) are invited
for live interaction with the
listeners on any specific subject
or issue.
These
sessions are relayed live from
IGNOU’s Electronic Media Centre
(EMPC) and broadcasted on ‘All
India Radio’ (AIR) on medium
wave frequency of 1017 khz (Delhi-D,
Yuv Vani) & FM-2 frequency
105.6 MHZ .
Ms.
Kavita Parameshwaran, Gender
Trainer from Gender Training
Institute (GTI) along with Dr.
Anu Thomas from IGNOU were invited
as experts to talk on ‘Gender
Issues’ live on AIR on 6th March
2005. The anchor of the show
introduced the experts to the
audience and made it a lively
interactive session.
Ms.
Kavita started the session by
explaining the concept of gender
and how it is different from
sex which is biological in nature.
There were several examples
given on gender stereotypes
and how it makes an influence
in our day to day life. She
also shared her experience of
training and how the participants
reciprocate to such training.
Emphasis was laid on the need
for gender training for both
men and women from different
sectors like education, police,
corporate, lawyers and other
non-governmental organizations.
Dr.
Annu Thomas shared her experience
of working with gender related
issues in her field. She also
discussed about different framework
and theories of gender and how
it can be used during training.
There were number of calls coming
from all over Delhi asking questions
on different methodologies used
for such trainings. Both the
experts shared their experience
on training and emphasized on
participatory method of imparting
training having number of group
exercises, discussions, role
plays and case studies. The
programme concluded by sharing
of experience and note of thanks
from the anchor. Top

Training Workshop on Gender
Sensitisation for Teachers of
Select Government Schools in
Delhi
SCERT organises annual training
workshops for government school
teachers in Delhi, a component
of which is gender sensitisation.
Gender Training Institute, represented
by Ms. Pooja Parvati conducted
the workshop on two days; 15
and 16 February 2005 at Sarvodaya
Vidyalaya, Hauz Khas, Delhi.
The training workshop (for both
the days) was tailored for the
requirements of the teachers
with less emphasis on chalk-and-talk
approach and focus being more
on participation. After establishing
a common understanding on the
concept of gender, the resource
person conducted a group exercise
on 'change' and prevalence of
stereotypes as the most crucial
determinant of gender roles
in society.
This was followed up by examining
the process of socialisation
and its agents; teachers playing
a key role. Relevant case studies
and examples were shared and
discussed. Role of power, gender
roles and needs, concepts of
equity and equality were also
discussed.
It was highlighted that need
for gender sensitisation at
schools for both teachers and
students was imminent to restructure
existing social relationships.
After seeking the participants'
feedback and suggestions, the
session was brought to a close.Top

of Women & Child and Rural
Development Departments, Haryana
Government
A half - day workshop on Gender
Mainstreaming in Five - Year
Plans was conducted for the
Haryana Government officials
at Haryana Institute of Public
Administration (HIPA) complex
on 25 January 2005. Ms. Mallica
Misra and Ms. Pooja Parvati
were the resource persons from
Gender Training Institute.
Beginning with examining the
issue of gender, concepts of
patriarchy and prevalent value
systems in a society as determinants
of gender constructs; the resource
person elaborated also elaborated
on related concepts of power,
gender roles and corresponding
gender needs, equity and equality.
This was followed by understanding
gender mainstreaming and inclusion
of the same in five year plan
history in the country. The
methodology adopted was lecture-cum-group
exercise. The participants were
divided into two working groups
and made to present activity
profile for men and women alongwith
use of metaphors for their perceived
role in their respective workplace/community/home.
