Training at HIPA for Class I and II officers of Haryana Government 12th January 2004

Thirty-four participants from the Haryana Government’s Departments of Women and Child Development, Health, Prosecution, Social Justice and Empowerment were present for this session. GTI took the session on Patriarchal values: Restructuring gender relations in the context of falling sex ratio within the household in Haryana. The session began with the facilitators explaining to the participants that participatory methodology would be followed in the workshop through which one would arrive at a common understanding of the issue. For this the participants were divided into three groups and each group was asked to work on answering questions related to patriarchy based on their understanding. These helped to arrive at a clear understanding of what patriarchy is, how it gets manifested in our lives, whether it is the same everywhere, what men control in patriarchy, what happens to women in a patriarchal structure and how they benefit/support the system. Important issues of preference for a son, the woman having no identity of her own, mobility, access and control for women were raised during the discussion. The Pre-Natal Diagnostic Test Act and the Regulation Act were also talked about during the session. To end the session a film was shown to the participants, which highlighted the sex selection problem in Punjab and helped to sum up the proceedings of the session.Top

Training on Re-defining gender in the context of changing sex-ratio in Haryana 13th January 2004

This was a session organized by HIPA for the Haryana Civil servants and was a part of their induction course. There were twenty-seven participants in all. The session began with an introduction of GTI and the participants. In order to understand the concept of gender the participants were divided into four groups and two groups were asked to explore the reasons for wanting a girl and the other two to explore the reasons for wanting a boy. The output highlighted stereotypical roles, which govern our values and influence one’s preference for a boy or girl. Analyzing the output the facilitator asked the participants which qualities are exclusively men’s or women’s. This revealed that only on the basis of biological factors is there a difference between men and women, all the others are socially constructed and hence change is possible. The session moved forward by exploring the reasons for the preference for a boy child and through discussion on the Pre natal Diagnostic Test Act and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. The extent of the practice of these Acts was discussed. A participant, who had been practicing medicine earlier, also discussed some medical cases of families who had wanted a boy child and highlighted the role of family members and doctors and therefore the need for building greater sensitivity to the issue of gender. Gender Sensitisation Workshop: Palam Gaon and Sangam Vihar - 3rd and 6th February 2004

In a year CSR organizes such type of workshops in areas where it is working, Palam Gaon near Domestic Airport and Sangam Vihar in South Delhi are two of them. Community relations of CSR in these areas are very good because of the intense work going on for several years.

For a new group of adolescent girls a one-day training programme was organized in each area. There were nearly 25 girls in each group. Both the groups were interactive and lively during the whole day. The issue of gender and gender differences was discussed with them. This time focus was on the role of adolescent girls in challenging such differences. One of the girl said that their brothers who are of similar age group resist their moves for getting education. They feel that eve teasing is very common so it is better to stay at home which hinders development of girls. She said that such types of workshops are also needed for boys; the facilitator endorsed this idea. Facilitator was of the view that boys/men can play a major role in combating violence against women and GTI would conduct such programmes at community level very soon. Training day came to an end with the showing of films on the concept of love and career, which are very related to adolescent girls and boys. Films emphasizes on how to shape the career according to interests. Choice of profession is also shaped by gender; therefore it is necessary to break stereotypes, which reinforce the same old patriarchal views. Top

AIDS awareness workshop for adolescent girls of Chattarpur and Sangam Vihar 8-9th and 20-21st February 2004

These were two-day workshops on Gender and HIV/AIDS for adolescent girls from Chattarpur and was the second in series of the AIDS workshops for adolescent girls under the project on HIV/AIDS supported by the Asian Development Bank. Twenty-five adolescent girls attended the workshop. The workshop began with a session on introduction which interestingly brought out that while many participants said that they liked going out at the same time at the same time pointed out that they did not get an opportunity to do so except when some important work had to be done. They revealed this was so because the parents feared that their daughter might be eve-teased. Also aspects such as desire to study and be economically independent were strongly reflected in this session. This was followed by sessions on understanding the concept of gender, where participants worked in groups and the gender stereotypes were brought to the fore. This was followed by the session on getting to know pour bodies where participants and facilitator together discussed the various bodily changes that take place during adolescence. The menstrual cycle and pregnancy were also explained to the participants, which the participants were very enthusiastic to learn. On the second day of the workshop STDs/HIV/AIDS were discussed with the participants. The causes for the spread, the symptoms, the tests and the methods for prevention were discussed with the participants in a detailed way. To help provide a clearer and deeper understanding certain games were played, myths and facts were discussed and participants were asked to fill in some questionnaires. At the same time the use of condom was also discussed along with the precautions one must take in its use. At the end of the workshop their role at a personal and community level was also emphasized with the help of role-plays. This was followed by a feedback session where the participants expressed that this was a good forum to know about issues they always wanted to know about but did not know whom to approach Top
