| Gender Mainstreaming |
| |
| |
'Gender Mainstreaming' is a concept which emerged on the international development scene in
the 1980s. It has been explained as by the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues
and Advancement of Women as follows:
"Gender Mainstreaming is a globally accepted strategy for promoting gender equality.
Mainstreaming is not an end in itself but a strategy, an approach, a means to achieve the
goal of gender equality. Mainstreaming involves ensuring that gender perspectives and
attention to the goal of gender equality are central to all activities - policy development,
research, advocacy/ dialogue, legislation, resource allocation, and planning,
Implementation and monitoring of programs and projects.”

| CSR's Role |
| |
| CSR works on this issue through the Gender Training Institute (GTI). GTI was established in
1996, with the support of the European Commission. GTI is active across various sectors:
synergizing gender in education; helping the corporate sector to integrate gender in corporate
decision-making; capacity building for improved governance in Panchayati Raj institutions;
guiding NGOs towards fully mainstreaming gender in development work; and sensitising law
enforcement agencies about gender issues. In the past, GTI has conducted gender sensitization
programmes for Delhi Government line departments, the Delhi Police and acted as a gender
resource for the PACS (Poorest Areas of Civil Society) project. Please see the site of the Gender Training Institute for more information. |
